13/06/18 – 15/06/18 – Torrox and Nerja
On arrival at Nerja beach there was no chance in finding a parking space so we decided to camp the first night at Torrox, the next beach along.
We parked up on a piece of land where a few other Mohos were parked up and enjoyed the marijuana aromas drifting by. It felt relatively safe despite the Police call out to the group of young’ens being antisocial in the local park. The beach close by had dark sand and didn’t appear as well maintained as the beach further down the coast which seemed like a popular holiday destination. We used our beach as an opportunity to play fetch with Marley. Despite him avoiding the water at all costs, he absolutely loves being on the beach.
In the evening, we took a stroll on Torrox promenade which was pleasant, plenty of restaurants and many brits. One guy told us how he’d lived there for many years and wouldn’t have it any other way. We had a couple of beers and tapas (not so tasty, probably as it was free with beer) whilst listening to a saxophonist playing along to his sedate backing music. This was reminiscent of musac (lift music) and got more and more dreary as time went by.
The following day we moved back to Nerja and found a parking spot a short walk away from the beach, where we spent the night. We decided to have a stroll up to the view point (Balcon de Europa) which turned into an unexpected mammoth trek due to construction work preventing us going the shorter route.
Nerja town is very pretty and quite hip. It felt affluent with lots of boutiques and higher end restaurants situated along narrow vibrant paths. Although very busy with a lot of holiday makers, there was a very relaxed feel. The view at the top overlooked the beautiful coast line and the mountains, and was totally worth the hike. Being fussy pussies it took us ages to find a restaurant, but when we did I was soooo happy as it was predominantly veggie! A fab place called La Joya. I had a Moroccan chick pea curry and Dan had a red curry noodle dish. A bottle of wine and a bill of 57 was a bit of an unexpected treat to ourselves!!
We had a lazy beach day the next day starting with a coffee, or at least that’s what we thought we were getting. Mini ice creams on the side is what this cafe is clearly famous for, stupidly we had agreed to cream with our coffee….squirty cream with your icecream sir, why not!
The beach here is definitely not one for dogs, so Dan and I took turns staying in the Moho with him whist bathing our baps.
Highlights
Apart from the coast, the beautiful mountains and pretty town, Nerja is most famous for the Cuervo de Nerja (caves) which are absolutely worth a visit. Visitors can go in only one of the many caves which apparently go on for at least 7km. I’ve seen a lot of huge caves in my time but this must have been the biggest 😂and most stunning by far with its copious amounts of stalagmites and staligtites. Again, definitely worth the 10 euro entry.
Lowpoint
Driving along Nerja seafront one way road, we were not able to turn left due to road works blocking it off, meaning we had no choice but to carry on. It was too late when we realised the Moho was not powerful enough to make it up the steep winding hill with cars all parked down the right hand side. We were stuck near the top of a hill!! Three or four attempts, a lot of swearing, skid marks (from the tyres) and gasps from the locals, we gave up and slowly reversed all the way back down the hill and all the way back down the one way street. I was at the rear of the Moho assisting Dan with so many spectators! OMG I didn’t think we were going to make it off that hill, I could see us writing it off and several cars in the process. God knows what would have happened to us. Fortunately it was only our pride and stress levels that was damaged. Thank god for that!! See Dashcam footage below…..sorry for any bad language
We used a Nextbase 512gw dashcam for our footage. If you would like one too see the bottom of the page for the link to Amazon.
