4/6/18 – 6/6/18 – Carabassi/Santa Pola
Our next destination was one of my favourites because of its natural beauty, the lack of tourists and its peacefulness. We got a free spot on a piece of unused land (apart from the other happy campers) right next to the rocky coastline with crystal clear water. The landscape surrounding the sea was dry but filled with wild shrubs and trees. I found it easy to meditate and do yoga, and sleeping to the sound of the sea at night was so relaxing. There is a cute little white chapel close by that was frequently visited, and some people would ring the bell outside, we assumed as part of their religious ritual.
Both the locals and Police who were present, did not seem to mind dogs walking freely on the rocks and on the little beach, lucky for us as Marley loved climbing over the rocks looking for snacks and jumping out of his skin when a tiny splash came near him. He made loads of friends which was lovely to see. Although one dog, Sammy was not best pleased with Marley when his owner paid him some attention. His owners were a lovely Austrian couple who were a similar age to us, and were travelling with their 3 dogs. They explained that Sammy had been been found on the streets in Spain after his previous elderly owner had died, and this was the reason for his behaviour.
It would be rude not to mention that one morning whilst walking along the rocks with Marley, an older guy of a very healthy physique came swanning out of his Moho swinging his rather large schlong about without a care in the world. We later learnt that there was a nudist beach in close proximity to him. We have come across quite a few in Spain so far. Another thing….further along the coastline we noticed several men hanging about looking sheepish, and we wondered if this was Carabassi beaches equivalent of Brighton’s Black Rock area (local pick up spot).
Anyway, where was I….whilst at Carabassi beach we took a ride into the seaside town of Santa Pola about 4 miles along roads and cycle tracks. We were able to get up to some good speeds, and this is clearly why it is so popular with the MAML’S (Middle Aged Men in Lycra). The town itself was not that attractive. We went to the port, which was lined with chain shops and restaurants including a KFC….not for me really. (Although I’m sure Dan would defend KFC! 😉 )
Sadly, much of the area is still undergoing significant development and it looks like its not far away from Carabassi beach……I just hope this area retains its beauty and doesn’t fall foul in the same as way of much of Spain’s coastline. We stayed Two days but I could have definitively stayed Three.
Wild Camping
We are loving wild camping, it’s free and you get to stay in some beautiful unspoilt places. The only down side is, that after about 3-4 days, you need to refuel with water and dump the grey, and brown water! You cant spread out, or appear as if you’re actually camping, but with the sea as your back yard, its hardly an issue.
