07/08/18 – 09/08/18 Comillas, Cantabria
Comillas was another place that we didnt really plan to visit. It was only because when we arrived at the original place we wanted to spend the night and it clearly stated no overnight stops we started to thing about finding somewhere else to stay. Rather than risk a fine, we visited the doggie beach for about half an hour or so and then made our way to Comillas, the next town along from where we currently were.
Our first night was a small grass carpark on the road into the the town. We arrived quite late and bagged one of the last spots of suitable size. The site sloped in 2 directions and because we didn’t use the levelling chocks it wasn’t the most comfortable nights sleep we have ever had. (GPS 43.384226,-4.2990552)
Feeling slightly refreshed the next morning we headed out to explore the town quite early (Before 10:00) as we didn’t know if we were going to be staying or moving on in the afternoon.
Walking through the old town, it had a very relaxed and calm feeling to it. There were a number of medieval buildings around a central square. It looked like it was used as a starting point for some trekking as we saw a number of walkers getting ready for their day.
We eventually made our way through to the beach where there were loads of Mohos all parked up for the night right along the main beach promenade. it must be funny for locals having these big vans turn up and block their view of the sea every night – I certainly wouldn’t want it in front of my apartment night after night – lets face it, motorhomes aren’t exactly the most attractive vehicles! Having said that, the setting really was perfect, so feeling slightly wrong, we went back for ours (Moho) and paid for parking for the afternoon and then moved it to the beach side when a space became available. (GPS 43.3907929,-4.28988)
We both took it in turns to sunbathe as it was far to hot and busy to take a dog on the beach and then when the sun was going down and the beach had cleared, we went back with Marley for a run around.
Before bed, there was an announcement on the tannoy system. We said to each other that’s strange, but thought nothing of if as we couldn’t understand it anyway. We were already halfway to being drunk too as we had finally found a radio station worth listening to and had our own little party in the Moho.
As it got closer to 11:00 pm the rain began, not torrential but quite heavy…..then the winds came. This was the frightening part, we were on the front line from the sea, no shelter. A couple of times I thought the Moho was going to get blown over. The van really rocked from side to side, (Not because of our nocturnal activities!) so much so we got out of bed. Lorraine said i was being silly, but I could tell she was a little nervous too! I reckon the gust were over 70 mph.
Eventually after a couple of hours they subsided and we got to go to sleep. It was a relatively quiet spot after that. The next morning we checked and there was an amber weather warning for the area….it felt like a near miss and we were lucky.
Right, where next?
