Doggie Paradise – Playa de Lóngara

03/08/18  – 05/08/18 – Praia de Lóngara, Barreiros, Galicia

Well we certainly got what we wished for in heading to northern Spain in terms of a cooler climate. As we drove through the valleys of Galacia a mist descended on us out of nowhere, so thick that we had to put the fog-lights on in the Moho. It didn’t really clear up for the majority of our stay apart from a couple of hours when we took Marley to the beach on the first afternoon.

You might be thinking it seem like a bit of a random place to visit and it is, but we had recently discovered this great website that states all the doggie friendly beaches in Spain – https://www.thelocal.es/20160718/ten-dog-friendly-beaches-in-spain so we decided to give it a try and head to the closest one.

It was great knowing that you could legitimately be there throughout the whole day and not be worried about getting fined or moved on by the police. Access wasn’t for the faint hearted as it was down a relatively steep descent across some rocks but once you were down there it was worthwhile it and Marley loved it. He was even starting to brave going in the water (Not direct waves but some of the shallow pools left as the tide went out)

Initially we parked in a small carpark at the top of the dog-beach but as you couldn’t stay here, we moved a 2 minute drive down the road to a much bigger carpark on a clifftop (GPS 43.560619,-7.1937071) with other Mohos and opposite some expensive houses. (I’m sure they loved having motorhomes parked in front of them, blocking their views of the ocean)

From where we stayed there were clifftop promenades in both directions and we made use of them walking Marley in the mornings. It was a busy little place and everyone seemed friendly.

On the second day the tide was in making the doggie beach much more compressed and it seemed like everyone in the local area that owned a dog had it there. To be fair, all of the dog owners were great as they were all very aware of their dogs and were quickly over should they start getting into mischief. We even saw someone trying to teach their dog to surf.

Marley made a friend for life in the guise of a 4 month old puppy that kept breaking free from her owner and seeking Marley out. It must have happened 20 times!

We didn’t really do much else other that relax in the van when the rain came and watch some movies which was a nice change. Sunday morning came around quickly and it was time for us to move on as we were meeting our good friend Rob in Bilbao at the end of the week. We had some ground to cover!
