25/05/18 – 26/05/18 – Tarragona
After a few restful days in Sitges, we left without really doing any research about Tarragona, so didn’t really know what to expect apart from the Roman Amphitheatre ruins and the fact that we could park relatively close to there in a free overnight stop – A carpark on a hill overlooking ‘miracle beach’ (Although what was so miraculous about it, neither of us were too sure given the industrial backdrop).
We headed to the amphitheatre mid afternoon and as luck would have it, it was free entry that day, sadly though we weren’t allowed to take Marley in with us, so we got as close we could, took some photos and headed up the hill into the town.
Lorraine had spotted something about ‘Castells’ (The Human Towers) on our way over. As it turns out this is one of the traditions that Tarragona is famous for – they have schools that compete again each other with teams comprising all ages – the strongest forming the base, then four children form the pom de dalt (top three layers)
Then the smallest child (Often 5-6 years old) climb over everyone else to the top. Lorraine had a go but didn’t make it past the first level – she said no one seemed willing to lend a helping leg-up.
We cycled around for around 20 minutes and came across the historic part of the town. We were both pleasantly surprised by how well well preserved many of the old building were. there was also a bohemian/arty feeling to the historic centre as we walked through the narrow streets.
We finished the visit off with a couple of ice-cold beers each in the sunshine at Can Peret on Placa De La Font before making our way back to the Moho and a quick stroll around the headland behind the carpark.
Perhaps because it was a Friday night there, were a number of late night visitors the carpark doing wheelspins to the soundtrack of pumping techno, so it wasn’t the most peaceful nights seep we’ve had….However, given the number of other free overnight stops we’ve had so far, you can’t expect everywhere to be ‘tranquillo’
